It is an unusual instrument that I've managed to get called a PANArt Hang (sometimes a Hang Drum). It is based off of the Trinidad Steelpan but with a tuning that incorporates overtones into each tone field (note) and an overall convex structure that incorporates a resonant cavity.

Some info (and videos) here:

So, I managed to acquire one (after searching for six months) and I'm practicing without any background in drumming. It is such an unusual instrument that I'm not sure where I'd draw some lessons from as far as technique and practice. Tabla has been mentioned as a possible source for finger independence and strength. It seems a good foundation in rudiments would be called for, as well as working with a click/metronome from what I'm reading as far as overall advice.

Anyone have any experience with a Hang, or any suggestions on how I might practice/learn/improve my technique?

Thanks in advance!

Respects...
You might see this letter cross-posted all over the place. I wish to reach the widest community possible and your understanding is appreciated. Should you know someone who might benefit from this information, please pass it along.

I apologize that it has been a while since I last wrote. This past BIRDS festival was a smashing success. Thanks to everyone who participated in making it a most memorable event.

There are some fantastic pictures posted on-line for all to see. These pictures are from the two evening concerts and have been provided by Eric Willison, President of the Mill Valley Cultural Arts Umbrella (www.millvalleyarts.org); click on the BIRDS link under the Latest News banner. We will be posting many of these on the BIRDS’ site shortly. If anyone took pictures during the Saturday street fair, we are looking for new photos for the website. You will receive proper photo credit and a link to your web page, should you have one and wish a link.

On to other matters, John Millen has informed me that he wishes to step down as president of the board, after many years of dedicated service to the festival. I congratulate John on his extensive commitment and dedication to the community. He has expressed his desire to continue serving on the board in a sort of emeritus capacity. Institutional memory is vital to the success of any organization.

So where does this leave BIRDS? Well, to put on a festival that can reach a maximum potential public requires people who can work together to create the event. We need people who have fundraising & grant writing experience. Additionally, we need people who have skills in promotion & marketing…audio, photo & video production… programming & logistics... community education, etc. We are looking for imagination, innovation and creative problem solving.

This is a tall task!!! However, it cannot be done successfully by just a few people. This is especially true when taking into account that everyone has a life outside BIRDS: i.e. work, school, family and other obligations. BIRDS is a community-based organization that needs a strong community behind it.

Now, to next topic: the BIRDS’ Board. I am announcing that there are six to ten openings for new board members. We are looking for people who want to be community builders and who wish to influence the future direction of the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival. The board needs people who can do all those items I addressed above, plus bookkeeping and general office assistance.

There are no limits to the possibilities that can be accomplished if we work together. That said, it is important for everyone to realize that for BIRDS to move forward we need people to step up and take on these various tasks.

The beauty of this is that no one will be asked to do anything outside their expertise. If we can get enough folks to become involved, then no one will have to work too hard and much more will get accomplished. It is truly up to the community to decide the direction of the organization. It should never reflect just one point of view, but many.

Well, there you have it. I am challenging everyone to get involved. It’s now up to all of us to make this wonderful organization achieve its fullest potential.

Aleichem Shalom…

Legendary jazz drummer Max Roach dies at age 83

1 hour, 26 minutes ago

Drummer Max Roach, who helped revolutionize jazz by creating the fast-paced bebop style along with players like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Clifford Brown, has died at age 83, Blue Note Records said on Thursday,

Blue Note did not give a cause of death for Roach, who died in his sleep in New York on Wednesday.

Roach secured his spot in the jazz pantheon by redefining the role of jazz drums during the rise of bebop in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Before bebop, jazz was primarily swing music played in dance halls, and drummers served to keep time for the band, Blue Note spokesman Cem Kurosman said.

Roach changed that by shifting the time-keeping function to the cymbal, allowing the drums to play a more expressive and important role and, in the process, contributing to the shift of jazz from popular dance music to an art form that fans appreciated sitting in clubs, Kurosman said.

Roach also was a civil rights activist who brought politics into his art. In 1960 he created "We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite," a seven-part suite featuring vocalist Abbey Lincoln that addressed slavery and racism in America.

The quintet he co-founded with Clifford Brown in 1954 is considered one of the classic ensembles in jazz. After Brown's death in a car crash with bandmate Richie Powell in 1956, Roach led his own bands that included a who's who of jazz as associates. He also recorded with his daughter Maxine, a jazz violinist.

Roach played on many of bebop's seminal recordings, accompanying Parker, Gillespie, Miles Davis and pianists Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk.

There are a few open slots left for performances on the outdoor stage. If anyone is interested, just give me a shout.

As for the main acts, BIRDS is proud to announce Mahiri Fadjimba Keïta and friends, Shodekeh ( Beatboxing), Freek Factory (Nu-Funk New York underground, bass and drums), & Mz Imani and the Rhythm Shamans. This is just a partial listing of the various rhythm weavers that will be performing. More names will be announced as details become available.

Now's the time to start making plans to join the Baltimore International Rhythm and Drumming Society (BIRDS) in this annual celebration of world rhythmical traditions. Keep checking back for further updates and take a look at our website:www.drumtogether.net, for more details and schedules.

If anyone knows of any folks who might wish to take part in the festival marketplace, please refer them to the website. A vendor's pack is downloadable as a .pdf file. It only costs $65 to reserve a space. A great value that can potentially reach several thousand people.

I'm Tim(my), and I'm a drummer living in Anchorage Alaska. I'm new to this tribe. I've been drumming most of my life. Like all of you I love to play the drums, talk about drums, buy, and sell drums, and restore drums. I lust over drums like one might lust over a woman. (not that I do that), but each drum is different, and beautiful in it's own right, just like a woman. Sorry about the analogy, but it works right?

I have a nice collection of percussion equipment with a stidio in my home. I'm currently in 2 working trio's, with a third project on the side. I'd enjoy expanding my social network if anybody's interested in adding me. Peace, Love , and rock solid riffs to all!
I am looking for a percussionist and/or bass player to work with on some live acoustic sets in June- I am open to anyone of any gender really, but looking for a woman for one show in particular where all the performers need to be women-
I will be playing at Harmony Fest June 8-10th (open to working with men here) and then at Dyke March on June 23rd (which is an all woman event attended by about 50,0000 people!!)
I am hoping to find someone to work with for not only these events but also others in the near future..
My music is a fusion of soul, reggae, jazz, hip- hop... with a little Cuban essence here and there- I am a singer and play guitar- most of the songs will be originals though there will be some old blues and soul covers/remixes a la Cleome
Im looking to produce beats soon but for the time being am developing some acoustic sets to get the music out there -
It would be ideal if you have experience with hand drums, and world percussion instruments...and a blue and funky spirit influenced by blues, conscious hip hop and world music. The songs are not too complicated and simple yet rich and unusual percussion and rhythm fills are desired.
Please respond as soon as you can so we can meet and I can show you what I do and you can see if you like it! Even if you cant make these shows I'd like to meet you for future work. Its important to me to bring pure open hearted energy to the music with consciousness and honest feeling---

WyldeFyre Productions puts on a live show every 1st Thursday at Amy's Ice Cream on Far South Congress. The next show is April 5, 2007. The event opens at 6 with fire spinning classes, then belly dancing performances, then we have fire dancing performances & then we have open performance with live drumming & dancing (all types). We need live drummers (all style welcome - middle eastern is great for the belly dancers, african for the fire dancers, etc) & dancers (belly dancers, fire dancers or other ethnic dancers are all wanted). Please feel free to email me at AmberBarbara@hotmail.com or here within TribeAustin / AmberBarbara for more information.

I hope the drummers can make it out with us. Live drumming makes the show for me!

Ethnic Drumming & Dancing exhibitions/performances will also be considered.

The Guinnesss World Record organization has been informed that drumSTRONG drummers (and others) will keep continuous rhythm in motion for at least 24 hours starting on May 5, 2007 just outside of Charlotte, NC.

Along with local high school and college drum corps, a horde of professional artists have been invited to participate. Full stage and backline support will be on site and all present will play along with center stage activities.

health fair
There will be an area at the event with tents and tables where various health (and other) organizations will have a venue to convey their missions and methods to a large group of people. Few people are not "touched" by cancer in some fashion...

DrumsForCures is also organizing a national network of percussionists to bring rhythm into children's hospitals and clinics for the unifying, healing and entertainment values. We know that it works on many levels.
If nothing else, I’d love for you (family and friends) to come play – drum, sing, dance, enjoy…

We are pulling from a wide variety of musical styles including, but not limited to, New Orleans brass bands, klezmer, Dixieland, afrobeat, modern jazz (think mingus), ragtime, 19th century marches and old world folk music.

We are looking for folks that meet any/all of the following descriptions: set drummers who can be extremely versatile, percussionists with experience playing ethnic/world music, people with experience in drum corps/marching/street bands. We are a large band and this is very much a labor of love, so this is not the band for you if you are just a hired gun or looking for a steady paying gig.

I've been privately teaching a course for the last 20 years
called the RHYTHM INTENSIVE. It has been a big part of
how I've made my living as a professional musician
over the last 30 years.

It was put together using the study of many different cross cultural
paradigms, rhythmic mappings and notational systems but also utilizing
studies in neurophysiology and informational theory and psychology
to try and create a kind of "unified field theory of rhythm", as it were.
I've taught it to over 2,500 drum and percussion students and to
approximately 500 melodic musicians so I've tried to be very rigorous
in finding logical holes in it's development.

I've had people ask me to publish a book on the subject repeatedly
over the years but my artistic career has frequently gotten in the way and,
frankly, it takes a tremendous amount of time to publish a book
and there is not very much financial gain in doing so in the rhythmic/drumming
world, unfortunately.

Anyway, I just recently made a decision to go ahead and share this information that I spent the last
30 years of my life collating*

Also, I don't want to clutter up a bunch of tribes by cross posting it, so I have posted it
at the MiddleEastern Percussion tribe and the FrameDrumming tribe for anyone
who is interested in reading it or learning from it.

I think I will just write an installment every now and then because my artistic and recording
career is pretty hectic.

I hope it proves useful to some of you.

I only ask that if you share this information with people that you give me credit when doing
so...................I really worked long and hard for many years coming up with this approach
and though the map is not the territory, I think it is a pretty good map that one can use to
either teach themselves independence or to understand another cultures' rhythms and be
able to learn really quickly because of utilizing the system.

I studied with many master musicians and music theorists over the years and there is a full

Magnets and Drumming: something new?

Members of the Frame Drumming and Middleeastern Music tribes please forgive me
for the redundancy of this cross post.

I have been having a lot of fun with the very powerful magnets that are being used
as percussion instruments (I got mine at Rhythm Fusion and Pay Per Vision in Santa Cruz).

First I took the magnets and put them on either side of a flat ride cymbal. The cymbal itself
is not magnetic but the magnets are so powerful that they will stick to each other even though the
cymbal is in between them.

When you strike the surface of the cymbal with a stick, the force of the impact will tend to throw anything
off the cymbal (how a riveted cymbal works normally). In this case the 'opposite reaction' to the strike
is mitigated by the power of the magnet and the effect is that the magnets will oscillate rapidly causing
a crude riveted sound.

That was interesting, but then I tried it on a small, tonal 10" flat wind gong. If I play the gong with a soft mallet,
the force is not great enought cause a buzzing sound but the osciallation is enough that it 'plays' the gong.
furthermore, depending on whether I hit the magnets directly, the magnets will move across the wind gong
moving across the nodal points which radically effects the percieved pitch of the gong.
If I hit the magnet laterally (parallel to the flat surface of the gong) the magnets will not only travel across the
gong but they will also curve at the last moment and really oscillate more strongly.

The resulting sound is beautiful, exotic and haunting (a rather straight young worker at the local Bagelry, said that the sound
was weird and creepy.............lol)

I can all just shake the gong up and down in the direction of gravitational pull and the magnets' movement will 'play' the gong.

********

tonight I also found a new packaging of the magnets that have cube shapes in slightly different sizes. They come 8 to a package.
I tried them on a small metal, headed tambourine that I had just bought (for a mere $10 at the local Unicef store) and they accidentally stuck to the jingles of the tambourine, completely rendering them silent.

I realized that this means that any tambourine can become a jingleless frame drum (in this case tuned low like a kanjira)
in a matter of seconds.

Tomorrow I'm going to the harware store to buy some different sizes of magnets to see what effect they have on any of the percussion instruments that I have that are magnetic. I imagine if I can find small enough magnets that I might be able to really change the resonance of typical tambourine jingles........this would be nice because sometimes it's cool to have a tambourine that isn't really ringy.
I have some tambourine jingles that are wafer thin tin and they make the coolest and very, very dry sound.

In a weird way, it's a little like adding distortion acoustically to these instruments, as long as the magnets are't so powerful
to make the jingle die out altogether.

I'll keep y'all posted with the results of my new experiment. It's just the latest in my obsession with doing things to drums and cymbals that make them rattle. I'll write later about my experiments with large industrial chains. I got some fun stuff going on with those experiments.

WEIRD PERCUSSION TRIBE formed
tribes.tribe.net/weirdpercussion

Today in a hardware store, I found myself staring at a whole display full of magnets of different sizes
while waiting for some keys to be made for me. Because lately I"ve been on this kick to take normal
cymbals and gongs and extract new sounds out of them, I've been fascinated by putting chaing and
other rattles on them.

Anway, I have three sets of these super magnets that you throw in the air to make weird buzzing sounds as
they attract to each other when it occured to me that it might be really cool to put each one of these
magnets on opposite sides of a cymbal. Sure enough, you can cause some really cool faux distortion
sounds out of the cymbals.

Then I tried it on a small pitched wind gong. I struck the gong and then moved the magnets and got the
coolest sound to come out of it.

I just wanted to share it with someone and realized that there was no place to officially do so at Tribe,
so I decided to start the WEIRD PERCUSSION TRIBE.
I am designing a drumming machine so that a child with a motor skill disability can participate in a drumming session in his pre school class. The machine will have a pressure sensitive button which will cause a drumstick to strike a drum. I have had trouble finding the average force or speed that a drumstick strikes a drum. My design will have a rotary solenoid which will be attached to a drum stick holder. I need to know the force or velocity that an average drumstick strikes a drum so that i can determine the torque needed for the solenoid. Any suggestions or links to web sites that could help me would be greatly appreciated.
2nd ANNUAL SACRED FIRE CIRCLE ALCHEMY
ONE NIGHT ONLY!
Start: 11pm Wednesday, 8/30
Conclusion: Sunrise, Thursday 8/31

Since the dawn of time, human beings have gathered
around the fire to drum, sing, trance dance and to
weave magic in the light of fire. This year's BM theme
of "The Future: Hope and Fear", offers each of us the
opportunity to powerfully invoke our hopes for the
future and to cast our fears and those beliefs that do
not serve us into this alchemical fire.

We use the word Sacred in the title of this Experience
to infer deep, deep levels of gratitude and respect for each
other, for ourselves and for life. You are encouraged
to explore, maintain and/or cultivate whatever
worldviews work for you, so long as they are mutually
respectful of everyone in the circle.

We will provide this sacred space in the same general
Playa locations last year's all-night Sacred Fire Circle -
approximately 300 yards to the Southeast of the spine
(visualize 2 o‚clock on the dial), a few minutes
bicycle ride beyond the Temple).

Please bring:
drums/percussion instruments (we will have a lockable
trailer at the Circle on Wednesday so as to facilitate
early delivery of drums), warm clothes and enough
water and food to keep yourself nourished. The Sacred
Fire Circle is a potent cauldron for making real-world
magic! Please join us.

I am calling out: IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HELPING TO BRING a sacred playground of sound, movement and intention to the PLAYA, PLEASE BE IN TOUCH. There is a small CALI crew coming forth, and I know we can get this together. Again, it will be about you bringing what you can: The supply list is still on the discussion posts on the Magical Mystical Muse tribe site: and wood, benches, torches, etc WILL BE NEEDED for sure.

My intention is to do atleast 2 nights, and possibly 3 nights of fires. There is another group doing one night, and I want to be sure it's NOT on that night so that we are all respected and have space to bring it out without competing in any way. They are great folks and I want to be at that fire too!

Be in touch, and spread the word please.
- What is the best (and funnest) approach to teaching kids this age how to play in an 'ensemble'?

- Are there resources or examples of group drumming lesson plans for children online for me to refer to?

- Has anyone else here taught a drumming workshop for children? What are your thoughts and experiences?

Thanks in advance to anyone replies!

We are a working band that plays Celtic / Medieval / Rock style music. We are pretty unique and because of that we are getting lots of interest and bookings for festivals. We are based in NEW ENGLAND.

What we need are TWO very DYNAMIC percussionists to underpin and drive our sound to the next level.

You should be able to play Doumbek, Djembe, Bodhran, Riq, Congas, Cajon, Tenor, Davul etc. etc. etc. (either all or some of the above).

You should be creative and imaginative, be able to "move" on stage (put on a show), have your own transport, be reliable and be able to travel and work on a (fairly) regular basis. We want to create a BIG SOUND, are you up for it? Ever heard Corvus Corax? Wicked Tinkers? Albannach? If you have you'll have some idea of what to expect.

Does this sound like you? If so, drop me a line with links to mp3s and tell us about yourself.

Thanks!
